cartus commits to science based targets initiative (SBTi)

industry leader is one of only two global talent mobility companies to take pledge

DANBURY, CONN. (November 15, 2023) Cartus Corporation, an Anywhere Real Estate Inc. (NYSE: HOUS) company and a global leader in talent mobility and corporate relocation solutions, has committed to set near-term company-wide emission reductions in line with climate science with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This makes Cartus one of only two global talent mobility companies to make the commitment, joining nearly 6,500 organizations dedicated to taking urgent climate action.

The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) devoted to defining and promoting best practices in science-based target setting and independently assessing companies’ targets.

According to David Pascoe, Cartus Executive SVP, Global Talent Mobility,

“Cartus didn’t want to simply comply with mounting client expectations and governmental regulations. We wanted to exceed them while continuing to add long-term value in a marketplace where environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) performance has become an ever-more meaningful metric for the talent mobility business.”

A founding member of the Worldwide Employee Relocation Council (WERC) inaugural advisory council on sustainability, Pascoe completed executive training on corporate sustainability at Oxford University to educate himself and his fellow executives on the central role sustainability would play in the relocation industry. He notes that after Cartus met its original emissions reduction goals for company-owned operations, it shifted to empowering its teams to better understand the company’s short- and long-term carbon impact and opportunities.

Cartus also worked with its diverse client base and global supply chain partners to understand their complex needs and capabilities around sustainable actions. As Pascoe relates,

“We heard clearly that neither good intentions nor carbon offsetting can meet the challenges we face. We needed a validated approach to addressing our impact.”

With encouragement from clients like Mastercard and Salesforce, who had already set their own SBTi targets, Cartus confirmed its SBTi commitment in October 2023. The company now has two years to submit its targets for validation, though Pascoe notes it intends to set them much sooner to begin the vital work of achieving them as quickly as possible.

“We want to prove that ‘sustainability’ is more than just a buzzword at Cartus. In alignment with our clients, we recognize that protecting the environment is both a moral and a business imperative. This October, we fortified our obligation by publicly committing to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). This marks a pivotal step in our ongoing journey to enhance our sustainable business practices, lead our industry, and support our clients, their employees, and our suppliers in achieving their sustainability goals in line with the latest science and our current climate emergency.”
