unlocking global talent: our insights from learning and development asia 2025

At Learning and Development Asia 2025, organized by Human Resources Online, the Cartus team and over 200 HR experts and learning & development professionals were immersed in two days of panel sessions, interactive formats, and pioneering case studies which showcased Singapore’s progressive approach to workforce strategy.

key takeaways on talent development and mobility

On day one of the conference, Diane Mullen, Manager of Cartus Intercultural Academy, spoke at a panel discussion entitled, “Unlocking potential within: Rethinking internal talent development & mobility”. Diane and her fellow panelists dove deep into the current landscape of internal mobility, discussing evolving trends and key strategies:

  • In today’s world, internal mobility strategies within organizations are evolving, while reactive in the past, they are now strategic. Providing support is especially critical during times of restructuring, when employees may be asked to take on new or expanded roles and relocate overseas.
  • Organizational support for the employee is key. Thoughtful support, such as intercultural coaching, can help ease transitions as it enables the employee to build global capabilities and better navigate cultural nuances, setting them up for success in their new role and environment.
  • Lateral and step-back career moves are invaluable. Such transitions can help build competencies for future roles. With a growing focus on skills and capabilities, particularly among younger employees, it is important for organizations to recognize and develop these attributes beyond traditional job titles.
  • Build intercultural competence to support global collaboration by using tools such as cross-cultural coaching, language training, and cultural foundations programs.
  • The significance of language and communication should not be underestimated, especially in workplace settings where language barriers may impact one’s self-esteem, their professional identity and their integration to the environment.

three intercultural takeaways

  1. Organizations should foster a culture of continuous learning, encouraging employees to take ownership of their growth and development.
  2. Cultivating a global mindset and curiosity within organizations is key; as research has linked diversity and inclusion to organizational success. Within teams, leaders should maintain curiosity and openness towards different perspectives.
  3. When designing talent management strategies, adopt a proactive approach where future needs are anticipated, rather than a reactive approach.
